1st week - Leverano : Vino Novello
Leverano is one of the best wine producing towns in the Salento and the Vino Novello festival is held during the first week of November. Celebrations go on in the old part of the town, close to the tower that Federico ll commissioned in order to protect Leverano.
The wine festival in Leverano begoan in honour of the so called 'Vino Novello' (literally 'new wine'). It is brightly coloured and different from other varieties because it is left to ferment, but the grapes remain whole so that only a part of the sugar turns into alcohol.
The festa lasts three days. On the first afternoon there is a parade displaying local costumes. Muscians and street performers are all around the old town. Wine drinking competitions are held, you can recognize the competitors by the funnels hanging around their necks. There is also a competition for hot pepper eaters!
