Stretching

Stretching excercises seek out, not only muscle fibres but also the connective tissues (tendons, bands etc.) present in the contractile structure. The connective tissue is extensible (can be extended), but if strecthing exercises are not carried out regularly this essential characteristic is lost.

When speaking of stretching it is also necessary to consider joint mobility (also known as: Articular, flexibility, extensibility, etc.): and the capacity to make large movements to the maximum extent permitted by the physiological joints.

This ability is affected by:

- the bone structure of the joint;
- anatomical and functional componets (degree of extensiblity of the ligaments, tendons and muscles);
- the ambient temperature;
- body temperature.

It is important to remember that muscle fibres adapt rapidly to any situation.
